The Museum of the City of Gdynia chose Jakub Szczęsny as the protagonist of the ninth exhibition in the Polish Projects, Polish Designers series. There was no doubt that his versatile work would allow for a deeper exploration of an issue that deserves to be in the spotlight – design and society.
The exhibition shows how architecture intersects with design and what interesting things can arise at their intersection. We take a closer look at micro-homes, which have become particularly popular during the pandemic. We ask whether, as a society, we really need more and more space. Or perhaps it would be better for the common good to say ‘no’ to excessive consumption?
We combine the unique Keret House with repeatable (though customisable) modular micro-houses to raise the issue of minimalism and restraint as socially important values. We create an interesting tension between architecture and design – Jakub Szczęsny’s installations in public spaces, which are intended to be architecture in action, a kind of performance. All this is done to draw attention to the social dimension of design.
Does design influence us and the society we are part of? When designing space, especially public space, is it possible to design relationships, change the way people think and make them more conscious citizens? We will look for answers to each of these questions together with visitors, focusing on design as a tool that integrates society, improves the functionality of our environment and ensures its sustainable development.
